We Will Fly Proud

My intention was to love
and protect while I could
Spend those last days
of a life doing good
There were times of stress,
With sleepless nights
As the illness took hold
never giving an insight
Just switching up each dawn
unclear of what would occur
While everything around
became a blinding blur
For dementia did not only
affect you, the afflicted
But mentally drained my soul
with twists and turns, unpredicted
As we trundled through
an existence full of anxiety
Both lost to a disease incurable
which rewrote our twinned reality
While stripping us bare
from within emotionally
And reducing our ability
to interact socially

That time has now passed,
your mortality didn’t last
Alone I am less harassed
yet still the pain is amassed
As I try to move forward
in dementia’s aftermath
Walking on my own
along an unimagined path
Where my mental state
is in a bleak place
Needing to reboot and
learn to embrace
This absence of you
and the solitude of one
Within a deafening
silence, without anyone
I do remember the good
in what we once had
So, as I wake each morn
I have a mantra to say, aloud
‘I will again be by your side and
with Angel wings, we will fly proud’
