Midnight Chime

I have a hunger
To return to the wonder
Of myself very younger
When I would blunder
Through my innocence
That used to be limitless
A time of mystery
Long ago in my history
Where this wide-eyed boy
Was pleased with a simple toy
A matchbox car, shiny and new
In my favourite colour, blue

I have a hunger
For my mind to not plunder
Those memories held dear
When we were all close and near
A time of happiness
Now recalled as sadness
For that simple boy of before
Is finding life a chore
As a man with only a past
With feelings of been outcast
On the edges of society
Filled with anxiety

I have a hunger
That puts everything asunder
Scatters all commonality
Replacing it with a mentality
Which forms as an insanity
Cradled beneath a face of normality
A smile and a laugh of façade
An illusionary fraud
Put out to stave of pain
Repeated, again and again
While the sanity is corroded
As the senses are overloaded

I have a hunger
To return to the wonder
Of a youthful existence
Put in place a distance
Travel back in time
At the midnight chime
To when everything was right
Give the younger me an insight
Correct the mistakes
Remove the bad as outtakes
And start down the path
That doesn’t encounter my, self-wrath
